I went to Chihuly Night last October, and again I’m a bit late with posting some photos. It was bitter cold out, but we still had a good time! The handsome man in the photo is Penguin. =)
Oh, and I finished half of my open source monster, so I should be posting that soon.

Penguin: Would you be willing to paint something to hang in my living room?
Ninja: Sure thing. What did you have in mind?
Penguin: Big squirrel, little tree.
Ninja: Huh? Um, ok…

Initial sketches of squirrels. I originally was going to have the squirrel push the tiny tree over. I have earlier sketches of that somewhere, but they’re on the back of a discarded napkin.

Then I thought that I’d rather have the squirrel kick the tree over.

Here’s the tree, all uprooted. I’m not really happy w/ the branches, but I kind of like the roots so far.

Together, they’ll sort of look like this, only the squirrel will be much bigger and the tree much smaller.
* I don’t have easy access to a scanner, so most of my sketches will be photographed. I have access to 2 cameras (one has crisp photos, but is a pain to upload; the other has so-so photos, but uploads easily). You’re looking at photos from the latter—sorry!

From previous posts, some of you probably know that I volunteered in Mississippi last year to help rebuild a church destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.
Um, I never got around to posting my photos from my trip, so here they are now (a wee bit late). But better late than never, right?

When I landed my first full-time gig out of college, I was all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. I was all ready and rearin’ to go to tackle some work! Well, my first week there, nada. It was a dry week for work. I was bored out of my skull.
I befriended the flash department, affectionately known as the flash monkeys and painted them (as monkeys) in Photoshop (did a scan of a rough pencil sketch, made some paths using the pen tool, filled paths with medium grey and used burn, dodge, and smudge for the rest). I don’t have the finished versions any more b/c my computer died without me properly backing it up first. I did manage to salvage these earlier stages of the illustrations. I kind of forgot about these too until Tom asked me about them the other nite. So I searched through some earlier disks and here ya go. =) The image on the left is the photo that I based the sketch off of.

I’m not much of a writer. If you look at Penguin’s posts, you’ll find that his ideas flow in an orderly fashion and make sense. I, on the other hand, kind of feel like a poster child for ADHD. That’s why my posts are usually pretty short and have pictures. =)
Being that I’m also a bit shy, I haven’t contributed any stories or commented on the Daily Monster. Oh, I would visit the monsters and admire from a far; they were the highlight of many a long work day. When Stefan posted his open source ink blots, I jumped on it. This was something I could get into! Well, one fine day, Stefan emailed me asking about my illustrations. Wanting to see more, he said he had googled me and found nothing, except some websites about a competitive Canadian swimmer who shared the same name. I couldn’t believe it…one my heroes was actually looking for my stuff! Needless to say, it totally rocked my world!!! I think I did a lil’ happy dance when I got that email, too, haha.
Anywho, I showed him my coffee paintings from the post below, and I’m absolutely thrilled to learn that he digs them. =D So much so that we’re going to do an original art swap. I’m going to send him Tom (the last painting of the series), and he’s going to send me a new inky friend. I can’t wait!!!

It’s funny, I actually forgot about these until recently…
I don’t think I’ve shown these to anyone, save a few close friends and some other lovely folks. Well, here are my coffee portraits of my former coworkers for your viewing pleasure. Who knew leftover coffee could be so fun?

Here’s my latest inky friend from the ongoing Daily Monsters’ series. I named him Sydney; he enjoys gardening and rainy days. And now he’s just met a new friend!

I realize that the little girl is totally out of proportion, but eh. =) Her arm, neck, and leg are all about the same circumference, haha.

I’m working on making a Mother’s Day gift guide for the modern mum and came across these tees. If you or your mum are into comfy tees, why not check out the selection from 2K. 2K invites artists and designers to come up with their own cool tees (Bjork, Yoko Ono, Experimental Jetset, Upnorth). They normally go for $35 a pop (not including shipping), but they’re having a sale now! Select tees are just $19.95. The 2 tees I’m eying are these lil’ numbers from Rinzen & Shynola.
