Early morning inking

I didn’t go to bed ’til about 4am, so I did an ink sketch of Penguin. I finished the rest of it during my lunch break.

Sippin' Tea

I ink in bed. I prop a pad of paper on my knees, and I’m good to go. Here, I decided to use sumi paper. I work pretty loosely and then add detail.

Sippin' tea

I wanted the focus to be on his eyes and hair, so I didn’t shade in the rest of the piece and left it as basic, gestural lines. Since I saturated the paper with so much ink for the hair, the paper started to buckle a bit. I ran it through the xyron so I could mount it to some bristol board, but it came out all wrinkled. Fortunately, Penguin likes it; he says it gives the paper character. I’m just annoyed at myself for being so careless. I should have used 3M repositionable mount and then burnished out the wrinkles.

eye close up

Here’s a close up of his eye. I think I captured his eyebrows really well!

It's funny how you pointed out the eyebrows because that was the very first thing i noticed... they look so real!... and from what i have seen of the real thing, very accurately done... Nice job :)

Thanks, dude! But actually, Penguin's hair is naturally like that. It reminds me of a baby chick—all fluffy. =)
