The cow ate my homework

Here are my sketches from my first homework assignment. The assignment was to draw a deformed figure. I looked up some photos for reference…but they were really too depressing—domestic abuse and just really painful images. So I came up 3 categories that I felt more comfortable drawing: Greek mythology, zombies, and sideshow acts. These sketches are the first stage (all graphite). I still need to put gesso on and build up layers.

mini taur

Greek mythology: I wanted to depict the Minotaur as a wee toddler (instead the typical image of that raging muscle-bound creature spawn from his mother’s affair with a bull) at the moment his mother abandoned him in the labyrinth. Hehe, I’m calling him Mini Taur. I’m going to draw his mother walking away in the reflection in his eyes. I know he looks more bull than boy, but his eyes are definitely human.

+ the texture of the fur is pretty decent
- the angle is uninteresting and right now he’s just a floating head; I need to finish drawing his body

zombie

Zombies: I’ve been having this weird, reoccurring dream about being chased by zombies (my Dawn of the Dead dvd is right next to my bed, and I’ve been itching to watch it again). The dream usually ends up with me fighting them off and a bit of kicking. I end up kicking in reality, and the force of the kick startles me, and then I wake up.

+ sunken eyes and veins are alright (although, the undead probably wouldn’t have blood coursing through her body)
- her lack of nose and shriveled features make her look like an old Michael Jackson
- her lips are too full

bearded woman

Sideshow acts:
Instead of having the bearded lady being pitied, I thought I’d have her with her chin up, looking down a bit. Almost to say, “Yeah, I have a beard, what of it? So there’s a little more testosterone in my system, no big deal.”

+ blondes have more fun—the hair was a lot of fun to draw (I did the left half of it on the bus ride to NY)
- the perspective is SO off—her eyes aren’t at the right angle, her ears are too low, her nose is overly upturned. But hey, that’s why I’m taking a class—to learn how to draw better.
