Open source blot 12 + friends

I’ve been a bit behind with my open source monsters. I’m only on blot no. 12 + Stefan’s already posted no. 13! I’m procrastinating on my homework, so that I could get into blot no. 12. It was so much fun! I didn’t use Adobe Illustrator this time—it’s straight up ink, then scanned + composed in Photoshop. My arms were all sore from using the computer too much lately, so I opted for brush + ink instead. It’s so freeing doing gestural ink work! And strangely enough, it didn’t take me that long to do the 3 blots + mermaid. It was working in Photoshop that took the bulk of the time (I kept on getting the spinning beach ball of death).

I made this one for Tiffany Nelson, a very nice gal that I met through Mr. Bucher + the Daily Monster. She’s been filling my inbox with her lil’ goodies, so now it’s my turn to reciprocate. She recently mentioned to me that she likes mermaids, so I drew one for her in the lower right corner. The jellyfish monsters just came to me after I inked the mermaid. I will post my process later for those of you who are interested. ;) mermaid_bw.png

I like the negative—I think it’s quite striking. Blot no. 12 is the jellyfish to the far left. No. 4 is the big one in the foreground. No. 11 is in the way back.

For kicks, I added some color for this version.

Enjoy!

    Hi Jeff,

This is one of my favs too! I think this one + the one w/ Ralph were the most fun to create. It might also be because they used more analog methods. Digital is so convenient—you don't need to worry about gathering your materials or carrying around brushes. You just have to worry about compy crashing.

Ja, it'd be cool if I was a storyboard artist, but it takes me a LONG time to draw people. Now, if I could be a monster storyboard artist, I'd be set. ;)

Thanks again for your kind comments!

I really really like this one. I don't know what it is about it. Maybe it's the idea of jellyfish monsters ;) but I think this is one of my favorites. It's very surreal and kind of cinamatic. I think I could see it animated somehow. You should be a storyboard artist. Wouldn't that be sweet?
