Rating: 4/4 stars

Sunshine, the new movie by Danny Boyle, who also brought you 28 Days Later and Trainspotting, tackles the sci-fi genre. I loved 28 Days, so I was looking forward to seeing what he’s done to the sci-fi genre. By no means, is this 2001: A Space Odyssey, but I would say that it’s definitely up there.

The first two acts are a revelation. The third act, gets a little derivative plot wise, but the acting is so good, and the cinematography is so good, and the editing is SO GOOD, that it doesn’t matter.

I just finished watching it and I had to look up the times to see it again. This is something you have to see on the screen. I called up Ninja, and we’re going to see it tonight. It’s that good.

I never liked 2001: A Space Odyssey. I always felt it was over-hyped. Kubrick was talented, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes I feel like his movies were liked just because he made them; often times this is the fate of a well-known artist. I read recently that Kari from Mythbusters is a sculpture artist but stopped selling her stuff because people had started buying them simply because she made them, not because they liked her art.

On the otherhand, everyone has different tastes, so maybe 2001 just isn’t my cup of tea. I’ll try watching it again sometime and see if my opinion of it has changed.

I think parts of 2001 are mad boring. But it’s influence and innovations are still astounding. I mean, who else could get away with 10 minutes of just colored lights close up on an eye?

But seriously. It was the first movie to prominently use sound and music. It was the first space movie to actually capture space realistically (lack of sound, newtonian physics). Also the intro is amazing with the Earth rise and the monkeys.

I think, 2001 is composed more of great scenes and movie history, than anything else. I could watch some of those scenes alone. And when you sit down and think about it, you remember those scenes more than you do the movie as a whole.

So, when we look at the movie, we think, not so good. But then we realize everything the movie did, and you’re just like, wow.
