1936 Breslau

I found this lil’ photo tucked away in a thrift store. I was charmed by the handwriting on the back on the photo. You really don’t see cursive much nowadays. What struck me was the loops, + such big writing for such a small, precious object.

I’ll admit, I felt weird purchasing someone else’s memories (kind of reminded me a lil’ of Dark City). But another part of me thought well, it’s almost like buying a portrait of someone…

Lots of questions were popping up in my head. Who was this fellow? Why would he/his family sell this photo? More likely, someone else found it + decided to sell it. Was it hidden under a floorboard in someone’s apartment?

There’s no name written on the back, so I’m guessing either he wrote the bit on the back or someone who knew him (as they would already recognize him in the photo + have no need to identify him).

From what I can make out, I think it’s a date + possibly a street address. 1936 Breslau. This was taken before the war. Gozeuslr? I’m not sure what this word is? Maybe it’s a street name. Or perhaps a month? Grudzień (December) is the only month I know in Polish that looks close.

I know it’s a bit of a long shot, but if you do happen to know the man in the photo, please email me at ninja [at] ninjavspenguin [dot] com. I’d like to return the photo to you, so you can put it back in its proper place in your family album. =)

Have a lovely Sunday,
Ninja

    Hallo Maria,

You're the first person who's commented & emailed me on this topic, so thank you for helping clear up a few things. Your father must have very lovely handwriting if it resembles the script on the back of the photograph! Oh yes, those old photographs are very charming, indeed.

Thanks again for the info & stopping by our humble site. Have a lovely weekend!

Cheers from New Jersey to Ireland,

the photo reads "1936, gotjenstr. 15, breslau"
although i am not 100% sure if the "j" in gotjenstr might actually be a "g".
gotjenstr. 15 refers to a street. 'str. #' at the end of a word refers to a street name in germany or poland. this street name would have been most likely changed after world war 2.
breslau is a name for wroclaw, which is a city in west poland.
    quoting http://www.wroclaw-life.com/wroclaw/breslau :
"Breslau was, until quite recently, one of the foremost cities in Prussia, the powerful Germanic state that bossed Europe until the end of the Second World War. And whereas today the majority of Europeans are happy to use the Polish name of Wroclaw, there are many west of the German-Polish border who still refer to this Silesian town by the pre-war title of Breslau."
i am able to read this writing queit well because my father had very similar writing, he was born 1921 and he lived around middle east germany/ middle west poland for queit some time.
i hope i have somehow helped you =)
