‘Til death do us part toys
Ninja October 31st, 2007

Just in time for Halloween—Tokidoki put out this cute lil’ set of toys. The 5″ tall pair goes for $32.00 US.

ADIOS spent 500 years in fire and brimstone before the devil discovered his good-natured ways and kicked him out of hell. Too mischievous for heaven, Adios was condemned to live forever on earth, in his modern grave-loft with his girlfriend ciao ciao and their cat Skeletrino. Together, Adios and ciao ciao wander the world, sharing with others how to make the most out of this life.

Ask Ninja 08: Shoes for the tux
Ninja October 30th, 2007

Q: Could you recommend an alternative for a groomsman shoe?
A: Sure! I’ve never been a fan of the shiny, patent leather look with a tux. I’m no fashionista, but I’ll give it a stab. Here are some shoes that I think offer style, comfort, & best of all, you wouldn’t feel embarrassed about wearing them out again. (purchasing links after photos)

Slick silhouette with a pointy toe. The comfort of a sneaker with the sleek styling of a designer boot.

A sneaky zip in the back for easy put-on and removal.
+ A lil’ Rock n’ Roll
Brand: Ash
Style#: 40455
Style Name: Seven
Material: Nappa Vintage upper, rubber sole
Color: Black

Love that wood-grain pattern on the top & bottom on the shoes!
+ Tree-lover’s Shoe
Brand: House Industries (yes, the type foundry)
Style Name: The Arborist
Material: Suede upper (laser-etched with subtle wood-grain pattern), cork midsole, rubber sole with wood-grain pattern (leave your mark where ever you walk)
Colors: Black, Tan, Brown

No laces!
Brand: John Varvatos for Converse
Style Name: Chuck Taylor All Star
Material: Suede upper, rubber sole

I hope that helps & congrats on your wedding!
Cheers,
Ninja

Aya Tsukioka’s vending machine skirt is part of a new line of urban camouflage. This piece was originally designed to keep a gal safe while hiding from a potential mugger.
It would also make a pretty cool Halloween get-up.

It’s always a kick in the pants when I see such young talent. Seesh, Jack Usine has some nice type.
Bio:
Mr. Usine was born in Thionville, France in 1981. He studied at the Fine Arts School of Bordeaux. In 2002, he founded his type foundry, SMeltery, while still in school. Not only is he a pretty spiffy type designer, he’s also a graphic designer! He’s currently working with Fanny Garcia at the Garcia Usine studio (GUsto).
Free Fonts:
Jack is also quite generous and has some quality free fonts for download!
Of his free goodies, my favorites are his latest Stigmate (inspired by tree initial carvings) + AUdimat version 2.

Review Stars Redacted
Penguin October 27th, 2007
![]()
I just went through and redacted all the star ratings for my reviews from out of 5 to out of 4. Here’s why:
- 4 stars is the industry standard for reviews
- 4 stars makes more mathematical sense. On a bell curve, most movies should fall in the middle. This means most movies should be about 2.5 on a 5 star system and a 2 on a 4 star system. I was leaning a little heavy positively when I was using the 5 star system.
- Ninja would be confused when she saw the rating, she just assumed it was out of 4 stars.
Star ratings explained:
The star rating isn’t so much about how good the movie is, but more my level of recommendation. To see if a movie is good or not, you should just read the review.
0 Stars – Stay away! There is absolutely no reason why you should be watching this.
1 Star – Not recommended. If you really have nothing better to do.
2 Stars – Average. I would wait for DVD.
3 Stars – Recommended. You should probably go see this. If not in theatres, at least on DVD.
4 Stars – Highly recommended. You have to go see this right now. And then buy the DVD.
Remember, these are my tastes and recommendations. It’s not indicative of whether you will get the same level of enjoyment as I have.

Heller on illustration vs. photography

“I’ve always found that Illustrators are the most brilliant people on the face of the earth… I never liked photography. I always thought it was too easy.” – Steven Heller
Don’t get me wrong—I do like photography. But I love illustration (and Mr. Heller). ~__^
