Review: Logitech mm28 Portable Speakers

Penguin November 23rd, 2007

In drama this year, we’re going to shooting music videos so I needed a solution to play music for my actors. I settled on this set.

The good: The sound quality is pretty good.  It’s nice and loud and the notes and voices are crisp and clear. The speakers vibrate the entire face to produce sound, so the bass levels aren’t very good. The thing also advertises 45 hours of battery life from 4 AA batteries. Not bad for such a loud system. If you run out of batteries, there’s an external AC adapter too. The cover folds under to become a stand and the miniplug stowes inside the body.

The bad: The bass levels aren’t very good. The unit is thicker than it appears in the picture. And the whole thing is just larger overall. The thing is about a foot long and 4 inches high. Even though it’s advertised as only 1.24 inches thick, it feels closer to 1.5 inches. As you can see, the main problem is it’s size. It’s not nearly as portable as they make it out to be.

Conclusion: The size helps it achieve some big sound and Logitech has put some real thought into the speakers. If you’re looking for something you can carry comfortably in your bag, you might want to pass. But if you just need to play something from your iPod or mp3 player in an outdoor setting or for a larger crowd, it’s a fair investment.
