Review: Saw
Penguin December 30th, 2007
![]()
Rating: 3/4 stars
Saw spawned a franchise which is as regular as Halloween. It’s one of the few franchises where each iteration makes more than the previous one. You should watch it for no other reason than it being culturally significant.
It’s also a testament to how powerful strong concepts are. And even though the premise seems like it would lend itself to a lot of gore, there is surprisingly little blood. And I would like to say that I really enjoyed it, but there were parts that were kind of boring. You would think a movie that’s supposed to be tense and thrilling, just kind of plods along. Maybe Ninja’s right, I’m just too desensitized.

The other day, I held a private screening of Love Angle for my principle actors. They mainly wanted to see how bad they were, understandable considering they’re amateur actors. I think the best compliment was when they said it wasn’t as bad as they thought it would be. Considering that most people cringe when they see themselves, I consider that fair praise.
Based on some of the feedback and just watching it again, I made a few more changes. Another 9 hours later (6.5 to render, 2.5 to burn) I’ll have the DVD.
The whole thing should be up on YouTube in a few weeks.

Rating: 2/4 stars
Knocked Up is Judd Apatow’s the follow up hit to The 40 Year Old Virgin. Ben (Seth Rogen) goes to a party and meets Alison (Katherine Heigl) who he ends up spending the night together. She gets pregant and decides to keep the baby. The rest of the movie covers their romantic development and themes of growing up.
It wasn’t a bad movie, just not all that funny. The 40 Year Old Virgin was much better in the laugh department. But Apatow manages to weave a heart felt story of two mismatched people who find each other. There are parts that seem drawn out, but the main problem, is that it’s too real. The circumstances and the way the deal with them are too true and common to really be funny.
