I really wanted to enjoy Revolver, really! It’s the new movie by Guy Ritchie, who also did Lock Stock and two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, the hardest movie to google. This was supposed to be Ritchie’s return to form, but it really isn’t.
Here’s the set up. Jake (Jason Statham) gets out of prison, somehow manages win a ton of money from Macha (Ray Liotta). Macha’s pissed, so he tries to kill Jake. Zach (Vincent Pastore) and Avi (André Benjamin, aka Andre 3000) save his life only to tell Jake that he has 3 days to live. They can protect him from Macha during these 3 days, but it’ll cost him his entire fortune. Sounds interesting, right? Wrong.
It’s right after the set up that everything starts falling apart. The narrative structure just disappears and things just happen for the sake of happening. The thing spirals into a pretentious glop of self-discovery and battling inner demons and all this other garbage that doesn’t really make any sense. I watched the UK cut, and it was hard to follow. I heard that the US release is 10 minutes shorter and even more confusing, purposefully!
There’s really no way I can recommend this, not even to Ritchie fans. The action, how scant it is, is mediocre. There’s a great set of assassinations towards the end, but by that time, you really don’t care anymore. Stay away. Stay far away.
