Review: Saw

Penguin December 30th, 2007

Rating: 3/4 stars

Saw spawned a franchise which is as regular as Halloween. It’s one of the few franchises where each iteration makes more than the previous one. You should watch it for no other reason than it being culturally significant.

It’s also a testament to how powerful strong concepts are. And even though the premise seems like it would lend itself to a lot of gore, there is surprisingly little blood. And I would like to say that I really enjoyed it, but there were parts that were kind of boring. You would think a movie that’s supposed to be tense and thrilling, just kind of plods along. Maybe Ninja’s right, I’m just too desensitized.

  • I was quite let down by this movie, I have to say. Perhaps it had just been built up too much by people that watch all the more trendy horror movies, but I really didn't get what the big deal was at all. I couldn't love it for the violence, since there really wasn't that much (and I don't just say that as a horror junkie; Reservoir Dogs was probably a good deal bloodier), and I couldn't really love it for the plot either, since there were so many holes in it. I did at least like Cary Elwes, but I always love him in movies so that really doesn't count.

i tend to agree. the main reason why i gave it 3 stars is because it's one of those things that you should see at least once. especially since they're making 5 of them. for the most part, i was kind of bored. even the twists at the end were more like, oh. not really OMG

I think the first one was so important because it was so successful for something made so cheaply. Almost all of it happens in that little room. But why it continues to be successful escapes me.
