If you’re not familiar with Theo Jansen, he’s the one responsible for those beautiful walking sculptures powered by wind. Jansen introduces some new features to his creatures, such as the ability to remember, detect water, and hammer nails into the ground. I can’t wait for these things to show up on my beach.

“The spring ‘08 color palette perfectly reflects the cheerfulness of the season,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Stabilizing neutrals combined with pops of brighter colors to create unique, distinctive looks are the basis for a great spring and summer wardrobe.”

Great little trailer where they cut up American Psycho and turned it into a romantic comedy. It’s great to see Christian Bale come this far. If he continues this trajectory, he’ll be one of the great actors of our time.

Please let me introduce Archer from Hoefler & Frere-Jones. Originally developed for Martha Stewart Living magazine, this slab serif has subtle hints from typewriter typefaces and delightful ball terminals. I’m so taken! Archer really is such a friendly, charming, and sincere face.
As to be expected from HFJ, Archer has hairlines that stay hairline even at larger sizes, small caps, tabular figures, and fractions. Archer’s 40 styles (eight weights from Hairline to Bold) feature extended language support in OpenType. Archer also contains both old-style and lining figures (each with a set of matching punctuation).

Let there be light
Afraid that Archer’s lightest weights may become awkward at headline sizes or disappear in smaller sizes? Fear not! Archer Thin works in headlines (Archer Hairline is useful for anything larger) and Archer Extra Light works in small sizes.
Save $49.00 when you purchase two Archer packages, or save $109.00 with Archer Complete (all 40 styles)!

Video: Seth Godin on Curiosity
Penguin January 29th, 2008

Yesterday, I posted about education killing creativity. Godin hits on a corollary to that. There’s something about people who are constantly asking questions. How does the world work? Why do people do what they do? What would happen if…? And it goes on.
Asking questions, or better yet, wondering, is the essence of curiosity. Although Godin tries to unlink curiosity from intelligence, I think the two are inseparable. The greatest scientists, writers, artists, businessman, are the ones who are always asking how things work. The difference, is that they take it a step further and ask: How can I make this better?
We’re not talking necessarily about success or riches. Some of the most brilliant and “successful” people never got rich. There are plenty of dumb people who exploit others to get rich too.
Creativity and curiosity drive each other. Be curious about your work. What would happen if you put your character in a certain situation? What if I combined these two painting styles? The questions are endless. Sometimes, it’s been done before or you just find that the answer isn’t as interesting as you first thought. But once in awhile, you’ll hit gold and it’ll be amazing.

Open source blot no. 23

I’m going to head off to bed soon (yawn), but I thought I’d start off the week with a new open source blot! And you get not one, but two blot 23s in this image. One blot is in the girl’s dress & the other is hidden in the butterfly.

I started off with some blue pen & a few layers of gesso. I like to use gesso as a blending medium.

I scanned in my pen sketch & the panel of wood, shaded the girl using the paintbrush in Photoshop, & drew the silhouette for the butterfly with the pen tool. The transparency effects are achieved using the Multiply & Overlay layer blending modes with different opacity settings.
Happy drawing,
Ninja
PS. If you want to join in on the fun, download OPEN SOURCE INK BLOT 23, print it out, & do your thing! Afterwards, scan or photograph your piece & email it to Mr. Stefan Bucher at opensource@344design.com. Then he’ll kindly post it on his Daily Monster site!
