hoop-dreams

Hoop Dreams is now available for free streaming on Hulu.

Hoop Dreams is a documentary about two African-american boys with aspirations of the NBA. It starts with them in high school, follows them into college, with their hopes of going pro. It’s a fantastic film which is both inspiring and sobering at the same time.

Slot 3 hours and watch it.

No Joke

no-joke

I’m not sure how I feel about Drew Friedman’s take on Batman’s supervillain created for Vanity Fair. Yes, it’s George W. Bush as the Joker. Great execution, but I think the Joker is far scarier as is without the goofy W. factor.

Kyrgyzstan: Day 6 – 7/12/08

kyrgyzstan-day-6-71208

Woke up a little before 6 today. I had a dream with Marcia in it. Don’t really remember what it was about though.

I did my devos and went down for breakfast of fried eggs.

Afterwards, I read my Bible as I waited for Marcia. She came by around 8:00 and we took a taxi to the orthodox church.

When we got to the church, we saw another camera crew there. They looked pretty pro. A woman came up to us and told me that my shorts weren’t really appropriate. I should’ve worn long pants. We started talking to her and found that she was the producer of the camera crew, here to shoot a documentary on orthodox churches in Kyrgyzstan for Kyrgyzstan TV. Obviously, she was a great candidate to be interviewed.

Giant Robot is pleased to announce a special in-store appearance by artist and designer Simone Legno of tokidoki. Since relocating from Rome to Los Angeles, Legno’s tokidoki has truly exploded in the pop culture and streetwear consciousness. Not only does his stylish, sophisticated, and cute art appear on the highly visible line of handbags for Le Sportsac but it has also received the seal of approval from the unoffical artibors of Japanese pop, Sanrio (in the form of limited-edition Hello Kitty jewelry) and Medicom (BE@RBRICKS). Legno’s latest project is a special collaboration with Mikasa to make a FIFA-regulation soccer ball, which he will be signing at GR2.

Hayao Miyazaki’s Ponyo on the Cliff

Ninja July 30th, 2008

hayao-miyazakis-ponyo-on-the-cliff

Hayao Miyazaki takes me off to far away worlds with his imaginative stories and steals my heart with his memorable characters. Every time I hear about another Studio Ghibli release, I get all wide-eyed and giddy with excitement.

Ponyo on the Cliff tells the story of a 5-year-old boy and his relationship with a goldfish princess who longs to become human. The Toho Company just released the film in theaters in Japan this weekend. Disney will distribute Ponyo on the Cliff in America hopefully sometime later in 2008.

You can find more info on this movie at the official website.

Mario, Mega Man, Pac-Man, and Sonic are just as iconic as The Beatles to our generation. They are our childhood heroes, our babysitters, our most awesome fantasies, and it’s amazing to see how wildly and diversely artists choose to interpret them, because every experience is a personal one.
