Kyrgyzstan: Day 3 - 7/9/08
Penguin July 28th, 2008
Woke up at 6:20, journaled and did devos.
Breakfast consisted of a style of square egg I hadn’t had before. One was kind of like a pudding, but slightly hard. The other was harder. It was different, not bad, just different. We also had these gingerbread cookies that were really good.
Before going to the Professional Institute, we went to the Bazaar to buy some fruit. We got oranges, bananas, grapes, and peaches. We also saw a gypsy burning some stuff. What they do is wave the smoke around you then they ask you to pay to get a good fortune. If you don’t, then you’ll get a bad fortune.
We waited for Valentina at the Professional Institute, but she was in a meeting with some interested students. In the meantime, we went outside with Marcia and Nazira to shoot some B-roll of them pretending to enjoy the campus.
We were able to sit in with Valentina as she answered the students’ questions. Afterwards we had the chance to interview their dad and his two kids.
As we were coming back from the Professional Institute, we stopped by a wool combing place. They had this huge machine to run through the wool. Across the street was a Russian Orthodox church. We asked if we could go inside, but they said we should come back when they had their service on Friday or Saturday morning.
As we walked towards the bazaar to grab a taxi, we say a barber shop. I wanted to go in, but it was late and we were all hungry.
We went to School of Blessing to grab some lunch. We had cucumber and lettuce mayo salad with mash potatos and a small bit of chicken.
After lunch, we went to the school that Nazira teaches. We got a nice tour of the facilities and some of the stuff that the kids made. There were a lot of traditional Kyrgyz clothes, bags, dolls, and hats. All hand made by the kids out of wool.
We went back to the office to interview Andrew. He was a little anxious because his desk was a mess. Then I asked him to pretend to work so I could shoot some B-roll.
I asked him to play some guitar and he played the song from “A Walk to Remember”. Marcia started singing a bit, so I asked if she could sing along with him. She said she didn’t know all the lyrics, so Andrew gave her some music. They played and sang and I shot a small music video in that cramped space. Then she said that she didn’t sing it very well because it was in the wrong key. I asked her if she could sing another song, so she sang “I Am Free” and we made a second music video. When we finished, Kostia came in and showed us the keyboard. We tried making a third video w/ the keyboard, but I think I stepped on something and it shut off.
Afterwards, we went to the conference room to do some translation. Nazira had to do some work, so Marcia started with the street interviews we had conducted the previous day. Then Nazira came back and we went through what we had shot in the morning.
At 4, we had snack time. We had a chance to eat the oranges, bananas, and grapes that we bought earlier in the day. Then it was back to translating. Marcia had to go home for a bit, but she’d be back at 5. We only got through Valentina and the father.
5 o’clock, Marcia came back, armed with a 4GB USB drive. She showed me some of her Photoshopped pictures and I got an mp3 studio recording of “I Am Free”.
Then we went to the gym for some fun time. They started with some traditional Kyrgyz dancing accompanied by some not so traditional music. There were 3 songs, and the guys were pretty into it. They didn’t match up completely, but they did a commendable job. It was kind of hard to get a wide shot of the girls dancing, because they were getting so far apart. A lot of the movement was in the feet, so I had to get a really wide shot.
Then the team performed Mission Impossible… again. But they went through the whole thing step by step, explaining it afterwards. Then they performed Prodigal Son. In the meantime, I gave Marcia the Youtube address and my email and I introduced her to Facebook, which her friend was already familiar with.
When the team finished Prodigal Son, they explained it and Esther gave a testimony. They prayed and then let the kids play. I stood around a bit, looking for a place to do pullups. Marcia showed me the playground out back witch was perfect for it. I felt a little weird doing my workout in front of her. Then I taught her how to use the camera and she threatened to tape me doing my pullups. So I stopped.
We went back inside, and they were dancing again. Marcia said that I should try and dance, but I knew that she wanted to tape me. I think it was payback for making the music video of her.
After the dance, they played the river game. The one with the pairs. Marcia invited me to play, so I joined her. It was kind of boring, until you go through the tunnel of arms. People would way to me to try and get me to pick them, but I just chose a random kid.
For dinner, we had a beef vegetable stew with a rolled noodles. More gingerbread cookies and a side of tomatoes.
