James Jean Kindling
Jonathan LeVine Gallery (map)
January 10th—February 7th, 2009
Opening Reception: Saturday, January 10th, 6 PM–9 PM
For his first show at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in New York, Jean has created a collection of original large-scale mixed media paintings and drawings on canvas, linen, and paper. Kindling will be Jean’s debut solo fine art exhibition.
Incorporating traditional symbolism and dynamic narratives, Kindling introduces finely rendered imagery created with Jean’s unique aesthetic, extraordinarily kinetic style, and sophisticated color palette. The subjects, as the artist explains, glide through the tableaux, tracing a narrative of thwarted desires.
His work explores the themes of metamorphosis, mortality, and sexuality. Several of his paintings are divided into multiple panels, echoing motifs from Chinese silk scroll paintings and Japanese wood block prints; two traditions which are sources of inspiration for the works in this show.
To give you an idea of what’s in store, James recently uploaded these showcards for Kindling:
I woke up this morning to a surprisingly brisk day. I hadn’t expected it to be this chilly, so I hadn’t packed many long sleeve shirts or pants. The pants that I did bring were pretty thin.
In the morning, I just bummed around and caught up on some blogs and other reading. I sorted through the pix I had taken and uploaded them.
For lunch, we met up with my cousin “clock” at this Japanese place.
Afterwards, we walked around the Taiwan University campus a bit.
Then we went shopping.
I was hoping to pick up a hoodie and a pair of jeans, but I was unsuccessful. The 2 hoodies that I did find didn’t have anything in my size. Most of the jeans that I looked at weren’t my style either. They were either too loud or too baggie for my tastes.
Then dinner, we met up with my other uncle at BBQ place. Think Korean BBQ, but without the Korean, just cook your own meat.
Throughout the day, I would roll video of whatever I thought would be interesting. Not sure what I’ll be able to throw together, but hopefully I have enough interesting shots to make it look nice, even if it lacks a narrative.
It’s been over 10 years since I’ve been “home” to see family. A lot has happened and changed in that time. I’m looking forward to spending time with them and just relaxing a bit. Though there is some work that I can do. I wish I had a new laptop to do some real work.
I’ll be in Taiwan until the 14th. Until then, I’ll have sporadic internet access. Hopefully I can jump on my cousin’s network.
Hopefully, I’ll be able to post pics and vids along the way.
Penguin is a Tetris addict and has worn out the buttons on his Nintendo DS from endless hours of playing. This post is for him and all you Tetris-lovers out there. Check out this illuminated Tetris installation in Sydney.
Every weekday, I get a little treat from Ms. Lauren Nassef’s Drawing a Day blog. Her daily posts range from detailed, realistically rendered drawings to stylized, line drawings (and every so often, she’ll include some collages).
This Chicago-based illustrator’s work can also be found on book covers.
What would you do if you found a lost, little penguin on your door step?
Build a boat and take him back to his home, of course!
My roommate first introduced me to Oliver Jeffers’s book, Lost and Found. Instantly, I was taken by his gorgeous watercolor illustrations and heart-warming tale. After I finished reading it, I re-read it again, and again. ^____^ It has become one of my favorite children’s books.
I’m so tickled to find out that director Philip Hunt and Studio AKA teamed up to create a 25 minute animated adaptation of this award-winning children’s book. You can take a look at some of the stills here and check out the trailer here.
Ninja vs Penguin wishes joy, peace, & love to all our dear friends! I hope you were able to get together & spend some time with your family & friends. As for us, Penguin & I spent Christmas eve chilling with friends over hot pot & beer. Today, I will be baking more cookies & watching The Nightmare Before Christmas with my family.
Thanks for all your emails, well wishes, support, & gifts (oh my). We love you, too!
Sure, it’s a fake trailer, but they did a great job of mashing up a few different films. There are a few sections where the makeup tracking is off, but for the most part, they really pulled it off. It’s a great little trailer.
