Whew, what a night! It was a totally packed house—my folks came by and almost got turned away until Kaki stepped in and gave them the OK. Thanks, Kaki!

I met some immensely talented artists, shared some laughs with new friends, and witnessed a very cool performance by Ms. King. A huge thanks to everyone who came out!!

I’ve been a fan of this girl’s work since I saw it on Juxtapoz’s site. My photos don’t do her guitar justice. I was totally speechless when China told me she thought my guitar was “fucking beautiful.” ^_^

Katherine usually works in watercolor, ceramics, and etching—this guitar was her first attempt at using acrylic paint. You wouldn’t know just by looking at it; she executed the painting very well. The painting is even more beautiful in person.

Guitar goddess/song bird, Kaki King, presents The Exhibition: a one night exhibit of guitars turned into pieces of artwork inspired by a Kaki King song title. The highlight of the evening will occur around 9:00 pm when Kaki puts on a solo performance of several songs, then plays the song Playing With Pink Noise with pink paint covering her hands on her iconic blue guitar. That guitar and several others will be auctioned off to benefit VH1’s Save the Music foundation.

PS. Correction: looks like Magic Hat won’t be there after all, so no free beer. But hey, it’s a free Kaki show with some amazing art—that should be enough reason to come out and join us. ~__^

Today: Art in Odd Places

Ninja August 6th, 2009

today-art-in-odd-places

In a collaboration with Art in Odd Places (AiOP), Sura Khudairi and Sophia Hadjipapa, will be presenting public art on 23rd street.

SIGN 23
Today, Thursday, August 6, 2009
5:00 pm – 8:00 pm
23rd Street between Broadway and 7th Avenue in Manhattan

30 DAYS 2386 BOMBS
Artist: Sura Khudairi
Performance will be across the Flatiron Bldg on 23rd Street and Broadway
5:30 pm and 6:30 pm
Two females, one dressed in military uniform and the other as an Iraqi civilian, start marching from the south end of the Flatiron Building where the streets divide east and west, to reference the political and social climate. As they cross 23rd street into the triangle, they will give a mirror performance that graphically translates complex statistics into an iconographic representation of the female cost of war.

THIS LIFE IS GOOD: A PARIPATETIC POEM
Artist: Sophia Hadjipapa
23rd Street between Broadway and Seventh Avenue.
5:00 pm – 8:00 pm – On going
Next to information signs or advertisements, identical signs are placed, mimicking the informative typography and color of the original ones. In place of the real text there is a verse from a poem, corresponding literally or metaphorically to the site, creating a poetic and strangely perplexing atmosphere for the passerby. In order to experience the piece in sequence one must navigate back and forth the street according to the routes specified by the map. (From A to B to C etc.) This kind of navigation requires not an ‘efficient’ straight line moving about the city, as we are used to, but a sort of meandering, piecing it together through exploring and treasure hunting, a childhood joy that we have long forgotten. Sophia Hadjipapa-Gee is a Fine Artist working in painting, video, text, installation. The poem is by Stephen Gee.

Painter: Robert Standish

Ninja August 5th, 2009

Hyper-realist portrait painter, Robert Standish, used go by the alias, Basil Hallward—one of characters from Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. Before becoming a painter, Robert held down various jobs—boxer, jeweler, actor, lifeguard, and he even dabbled a bit in psychology. In 1996, he received his BA in psychology from Antioch University; he does not have any formal art training.

My work mirrors individuals’ private moments of introspection. I find myself compelled to capture the moments when a strong desire and need to feel comfortable in one’s own skin are present. Similarly, I want to capture a person’s attempt at reconnecting or discovering some form of greater magic (conventionally speaking, God)  and the candid instant when a person reveals how far he or she feels from that magic.

Can Yudu fill my Gocco void?

I <3 Gocco screen prints! They’re small, intimate, and becoming rarer since Riso Kagaku Corporation
stopped manufacturing Print Gocco devices. Then Yudu (silly name, I know) came on the scene. Yudu is a home screen printer (larger than a Gocco, but smaller than your average press).

Some sample Yudu projects:

I’d love try the Yudu out, but it has a bit of a hefty price tag ($299.99 in stores, and $195.25 online from Amazon).
