Help for Matthew Woodson

Ninja July 22nd, 2008

help-for-matthew-woodson

One of my favorite illustrators, Matthew Woodson, recently received a serious spider bite (with subsequent fluid-draining), and is currently taking commissions upon request. The prices vary based on size and scope of work, but he is suggesting a range from $100-$500, which is a complete steal.

I’ve always dreamed of having an original by him and already put in my request! This is a really good opportunity to support an amazing young artist and help someone out.

For commissions, Matthew can be reached via Myspace or Facebook.

If you’d like to help out and get some great art work, but can’t afford a commission, you can purchase some of his prints here.

You can read more about Matthew’s spider experience here.

The Sayama Forest is one of the most remarkable urban forests in Japan, located just outside of Tokyo. This forest is the inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpiece, My Neighbor Totoro. With Japan’s rapid urban devleopment in the 70s and 80s, the forest has been losing it’s land. In 1990, Miyazaki (宮崎 駿) set up the national trust, Totoro Forest Foundation to preserve this land.

I’ve been meaning to mention Renée French’s blog that she started earlier this year. Every day, she posts a new, delightful drawing!

I especially enjoy her bunny drawings!

I was completely smitten when I first saw her drawing of Glenda, the bunny mascot for Plan 9 from Bell Labs.

Dream 4: Blue in Green

Ninja June 20th, 2008

dream-4-blue-in-green

My dream started off with me hitting a few simple notes on the piano. Then I realized that I was playing Gershwin’s Sleepless Night. I closed my eyes and inhaled deeply. Amazing!

After I finished playing that piece, the room got darker and sank. I started to feel this glowing warmth in my chest, and it spread through my veins to the rest of my body. I felt like I was floating. My fingers effortlessly found their way back to the keys. I felt a strange tingling sensation in my back. Small lumps were forming and growing larger with each breath. And then I sprouted extra arms!! @___@ What’s a girl to do?! Play Blue in Green, of course!

Yawn, sweet dreams,

Portrait of Dan

Ninja June 13th, 2008

portrait-of-dan

Ah, I know it’s Friday, but I don’t dream that often. Instead of posting a dream this week, I thought I’d offer up this portrait that I just finished inking.

Meet Dan. He’s the owner of the barber shop that I frequent. He’s a very sweet guy, but he acts all tough. He’s also a huge NvP fan—he told me that he painted and decorated a whole room to match our First Kiss print (which is proudly displayed in said room). O.o Wow, thanks, Dan!

When I last visited his shop, he joked that I should paint him some time. Why not?
Here’s a bit of my inking process:

I finished most of the line work, but the wash on Dan’s shirt was uneven and boring. It could use some texture and pattern.

ninja-vs-penguin_dan2.jpg

I photocopied the drawing and cut out the shirt portion to create a stencil.

ninja-vs-penguin_dan3.jpg

I placed the stencil over the drawing and used nail polish bottles to weigh it down to avoid shifting. Then I dipped an old toothbrush in sumi ink and used my thumb to create small splatter marks. The harder I flicked, the larger the marks.

And here is the drawing after the stencil was removed.

ninja-vs-penguin_dan5.jpg

Here’s a detail of the splatter pattern. I varied my flicking to create different sized spots.

ninja-vs-penguin_dan6pattern.jpg

Here’s one of the wallpaper patterns I made in Illustrator as a background for Dan’s portrait. For this pattern, I drew a pair of hair cutting scissors, rotated, and repeated them. I didn’t like the way it looked with Dan’s portrait, so I nixed it. I may tweak it later, and give it a go again.

Here’s the final. I evened out the wash of the shirt, then added more shading to Dan’s jaw and neck to give him definition.

Happy inking & happy Friday,
Ninja

Dream 3: The wood nymph

Ninja June 6th, 2008

dream-3-the-wood-nymph

ninja-vs-penguin_tree.jpg

Right about now, you might be wondering where is this wood nymph that the title suggests. Is she invisible? Is she hiding? Nope, I just didn’t draw her yet (it took a long time to even get this far in my drawing process). But imagine if you will, a small wood nymph sitting on that large mushroom’s edge watering the buttercups.

ninja-vs-penguin_tree-detail.jpg

Oy, this whole drawing one dream a week isn’t really working out. =/ But I’m going to still try to stick it through! In the meantime, enjoy this detail of fungi growing on a tree.

A bit of a let down, I know.

Humble apologies & sweet dreams,

This is another panoramic that depicts a “battle” of sorts. coagulated masses of human refuse are moving out from their birthplace in the North Pacific Gyre, destroying everything in their path on the way towards human civilization on land. The coral reefs (and we humans by proxy even though we probably don’t deserve it) however have defenders - the bunnyfish! A school of bunnyfish is defending this reef with their teeth and tails. Can bunnyfish somehow eat and digest all this plastic and garbage?
