When former Miracle Legion front man Mark Mulcahy’s wife, Melissa, passed away unexpectedly last year, she left him to care for his 3-year-old twin daughters. His friends hit the studio and recorded a benefit tribute album, Ciao My Shining Star:The Songs of Mark Mulcahy. This 21-track album includes contributions from Thom Yorke, Michael Stipe, Frank Black, Dinosaur Jr., Vic Chesnutt, and Juliana Hatfield. Ciao My Shining Star will be released next Tuesday on September 29, 2009.
Below is Thom Yorke’s music video for All For The Best, the first track on Ciao My Shining Star.
Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Greg Laswell is re-interpreting some of his favorite songs for his new aptly titled EP, Covers, which will be released October 6. In addition to playing many instruments on the album, Laswell also produced it in a cabin in Mountainaire, Arizona.
The five-song album features the following covers:
01. Killing Moon (Echo And The Bunnymen)
02. In Spite Of Me (Morphine)
03. Take Everything (Mazzy Star)
04. Your Ghost (Kristin Hersh)
05. This Woman’s Work (Kate Bush)
Here’s a preview of Greg’s take on Echo And The Bunnymen’s Killing Moon:
Your Ghost is on Kristin Hersh’s first solo album. The chorus is so beautiful and agonizing, that I couldn’t resist it. The chords turn around in a unique way and Michael Stipe sang harmonies on the original. I used his harmonies on my version, although I changed a few chords in the verse to fit the way I sing. I added the strings that close the song.

The idea of this song is that there’s a great artist who takes parts of the world into his own mind, changes it, and then puts it out into the world and changes the world by doing this, by using his imagination. So that’s what this song is all about.

The album that features contributions from the Shins’ James Mercer, the Strokes’ Julian Casablancas, the Flaming Lips and Iggy Pop. The entire album is streamed at NPR’s site.
Kent-based band, It Hugs Back, reminds me a tad of My Bloody Valentine and Yo La Tengo with their experimental feedback and dreamy guitar sounds. But what really caught my eye is their Tetris-inspired music video for their song, Now + Again.
Yesterday at the 2009 VMAs, Death Cab for Cutie, unveiled their single from The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack, Meet Me on the Equinox.
The song at its core is just about meeting another halfway, because life is very short, because there’s only a brief period of time to really connect with people, and that it’s important to recognize that.
– Ben Gibbard
The New Moon soundtrack is rumored to have an impressive line up including the likes of Muse, Thom Yorke, and Bon Iver. The soundtrack will be available in stores on October 20.
So here’s a new song, called These Are My Twisted Words.
We’ve been recording for a while, and this was one of the first we finished. We’re pretty proud of it.
There’s other stuff in various states of completion, but this is one we’ve been practicing, and which we’ll probably play at this summer’s concerts. Hope you like it.
Owl City is the moniker for Minnesotan, electro-pop artist Adam Young. Adam dreamed up his melodies while working at a Coca-Cola warehouse job and later recorded them when he returned to his windowless basement room during his insomnia hours. Before being signed to the Universal Republic record label, Owl City gained popularity on myspace with 5 million plays on tracks, such as Hello Seattle. Adam’s hushed vocals and catchy synth loops have earned him comparisons to The Postal Service.
Oh, it’s no secret that I used to have a wee crush on Robert Smith of The Cure. So I’d like to share one of my favorite tracks, In Between Days, as performed by The Cure and a few covers of the same song by Miles Hunt, Ben Folds, and Amanda Palmer.
