This week in review: Jah Army, Children’s DVD, Cold.

Jah Army
==
Jah Army is a a group of about 20 guys (and a few girls) in their early to late 20s from, living, and working in Kibera. Jah is swahili for God. They mostly grew up together and do a lot of art together. They sing, draw, paint, act, make documentaries, write, and now, making movies. They do a lot of socially aware content with an eye towards being role models for others in the community and encouraging young people to explore their creative talents.

Children’s DVD
==
There’s this DVD of “children’s” song that Jeremy (the 18 month old) absolutely loves. When it’s on, he’s entranced, he’s quiet. I can understand the appeal of something like that to parents.

Far too often, the DVD is set on loop, even if Jeremy isn’t there to be inprisoned by it. And I do mean inprisoned because it is a torturous affair.

Poorly lipsynced children singing to their own voices. Arduous fades between shots where normal cuts would be sufficient. Terrible camera angles. And of course the rancorous noise that’s considered music. With lyrics such as “Blue bird blue bird, through my window”; “when the army is up they’re up, when the army is down they’re down”; “everybody should love Jesus”; “the farmer in the dell”; and of course, who can forget “the cheese stands alone”.

I won’t even get into the inherent flaws in theology in the songs.

It may seem like I’m spewing bile on what many would consider harmless. But trust me. There has to be some statute in the Geneva convention that defines subjecting humans of any age to this torture as a war crime.

I could try to justify my hatred with some logic such as how the DVD is adverse to Jeremy’s development. How it’s destroying his ability to hold a semblance of attention. Or even the idea of a DVD as baby sitter.

But I won’t. This is unbridled hate towards the product. I hope the company that developed this material has long filed chapter 11 and moved on to more meaningful work.

Cold
==
We’ve entered winter here in Kena and the month of June is supposed to be the coldest. “Cold” seems to be in the mid 60’s and overcast. There isn’t any sort of heat in the house, so I often wear 1 of 2 hoodies that I brought.

There have been a few days where I wish I brought my Northface as I had originally intended. I had removed it in order to reach the weight limit for my luggage.

When the sun is out, it’s gorgeous. And there were days when it was down right hot. Those days were great.

It doesn’t help that it rains almost every night, keeping the air cool during the day. It’s funny, because it’s not supposed to rain as much as it has.

But the cold is a real problem for those in Kibera. A transformer that brings a lot of electricity deep into Kibera has been out of commission for the last 4 weeks, with little sign of it being fixed any time soon. Along with the cold, comes illness.

One of the members of Jah Army, Zayna, both her and her child has been sick for what seems like 2 weeks now.

This is a video i cut together from various news sources I found online highlighting the plight of the 300,000 refugees in Sri Lanka.

Find out more at: http://behindfences.webs.com

Sickness spreads like wildfire. Poor sanitation, scarce clean water, and insufficient food form the daily reality. Crime decimates dignity. Floods cover the camps in mud.

But the gates are shut; until given government permission, these refugees cannot return and rebuild their lives.

Will you go behind fences?

Intern Project: DVD cover

On Monday, we shot the cover for the DVD and the disc of The Intern Project. I also captured some establishing shots from around the office.

This morning, when I came in to work, I was greeted with a fantastic DVD case of Grete’s design. She even went so far as to write some copy for the back of the case. I absolutely loved it!

At lunch, we showed it to some people who had no exposure to the project and the reaction was pretty positive. Most people were interested in seeing it!

I’m really excited and looking forward to cutting this thing together.

Derek Hambly: Wrapped

Penguin August 14th, 2009

A few weeks ago, I wrapped my other project, a documentary on artist, Derek Hambly.

We spent the afternoon of Saturday 8/01 conducting interviews and taking photographs of his art.

At first, he was really nervous in front of the camera. But once he started talking, he forgot the camera was there and I got some really good sound bites.

After the interview, he took me on a tour of his gallery and talked a bit about his art. We also did some staged b-roll, for cutting’s sake. If I had more time, I would’ve tried to get it naturally.

The shoot ran a bit longer than I would’ve liked, and I felt like I was rushing towards the end, but I think it’s going to end up being a good piece.

Last night, we wrapped principle photography of The Intern Project. Production ran for 11 days over the course of 5 weeks. We shot on Weds-Fri 5:30-8:00 pm.

Some of the stressful moments:

  • Having a principle actor, Kristin, drop out a few days before production because her schedule wouldn’t allow her to be a part of production. Luckily, we were able to replace her with Euojin, who was a much better choice.
  • Rewriting the script over a weekend after finding out that Euojin wouldn’t be around for 2 weeks due to work commitments.
  • Jamari’s and my hair changing, threatening to screw up continuity.
  • Kristin dropping out, again, due to scheduling conflicts. Again, we were really fortunate to cast Leann, who had just gotten back from Texas the day before. She was also a much better choice.
  • Pajkou’s grandmother passing away. We were rewrite the last 3 episodes that day and reshoot some of the scenes she was in. Our hearts are with Pajkou and her family.
  • Shooting 90% of Grete’s scenes without her USB drive, a crucial plot device. Fortunately, we were able to hide it in her costume.
  • Dropping my camera on the hard concrete floor. As far as I know, only the battery casing was damaged.
  • Not being able to watch dailies, so I’m not sure if I got all the shots I need for the edit.

All in all, it was really fun and I look forward to editing.

White Box from makoto yabuki.

Beautiful short film with some elegant CG that’s unobtrusive.

As artists, a lot of times, inspiration comes from the strangest places.

Great short film about trees and Christmas. You’d never see anything like this in the theatres. And that’s the true gold mine for what’s to come. Original and innovative stories like this.
