Music Video: Metallica – All Nightmare Long

Penguin December 10th, 2008

Metallica has put out an awesome music video with Russians and zombies! It’s a really cool look at an alternate reality.

A combination of CGI, animation and footage scratched and blown out to look really old. It all just works.

Short: Doll Face

Penguin October 20th, 2008

short-doll-face

A machine with a doll face mimics images on television screen in search of a satisfactory visage. Doll Face presents a visual account of desires misplaced and identities fractured by our technological extension into the future.

A beautiful visually told story. The live action is seamlessly melded with the cg animation.

Wait, that’s all CG?

Comic writer and illustrator, Алекса Гајић (Aleksa Gajić) is directing his first animated feature film, Technotise Edit & I, which is based off his own graphic novel.

The story is set in Belgrade in 2074. The main character is Edit, a female psychology student. After her sixth failure at the same university exam, she decides to have the chip installed to help her pass. From that moment, her life changes and unusual things start happening to her.

Some of the scenes have a hand drawn quality to it, while others seem clearly computer generated. But surprisingly, the whole film is indeed CG.

This Image Metrics animation below just knocks my socks off.

Emily—the woman in the below animation—was produced using a new modeling technology that enables the most minute details of a facial expression to be captured and recreated.

Review: Wall-E

Rating: 4/4 stars

Wall-E is a delight. It’s about a little trash compactor robot that goes on a romantic journey. One of the best things about the film is the lack of dialogue. There will be long segments where all you hear our sounds. It’s just a great example of visual storytelling.

If you stay for the credits, you’ll be treated to a mini art history lesson epilogue followed by 8-bit renderings of the two main characters: Wall-E and Eve.

Go see it.

Review: Egon & Donci

Penguin June 4th, 2008

review-egon-donci

Rating: 1.5/4 stars

Egon & Donci is a free for download CG animated movie. It’s about a an amateur astronomer, Egon and his pet cat, who discover a “map” to Earth.

The animation is pretty good. There are some nice shots and good use of the medium. The scenes in space are beautiful, full of color and atmosphere. Unfortunately, that’s really all that’s good about it.

There are so many times where the film feels like a really long tech demo. The camera flies around a little too much. The plot is mainly just a vehicle to show off the environments and animation. It takes too long to start and by the time any tension or drama comes in, you’re kind of bored.

To download it for free, you have to sit through a short ad before the link is served.

One thing I really have to give to the filmmakers is their willingness to put almost everything online for download. I haven’t had a chance to go through it, but they made all the sound effects they used in the film online. There are also texture maps and cloud sequences.

Faithful reader Chris sent me The Water Shrew, a CG animated short with some really cool action sequences.

The CG is really good. At first, I actually thought it was real. It became more noticeable once you see the animals moving.

Thanks, Chris!

Some really nice animation and clever editing. The story is enough to draw you in, but act 2 drags a bit.

Video: Everything You See is Fake

If you didn’t know already, video has entered the Photoshop age. Where we no longer trust photos to tell the true story, we can no longer trust video to show the whole story either.

Compositing, masking, and other video techniques have gotten so good that they’re nearly indistinguishable from the real thing. We’re not even getting into computer generated graphics either. With a little color correcting and chroma keying, we can do almost anything.

Cute little short with some great animation. There are strong visual elements that stick. Even in a short film, you can see the basics of structure being developed.

Commercial: Millimetres Matter

Penguin February 21st, 2008

I try not to make a habit of posting commercials, unless they’re by Martin Scorsese, but this one was cute enough to present.

There’s some nice CG that really shows off the bugs and also gets the concept across nicely.
