It feels like it’s my birthday all over again. This week, I’ve been receiving such wonderful, thoughtful packages. Really, thank you!

NvP reader, fellow Daily Monster OS participant, and all-around nice gal, Tiffany Nelson, sent me this precious, sterling silver origami penguin necklace that she made. I’m incredibly touched. It’s just beautiful! Thank you so very much, Tiffany!

At one agency, I had the pleasure of working for Mr. David Wish (he was my studio manager). Then at another agency, I had the privilege of working alongside him. We spent so many late nights at the office. Not a very pretty time in our lives, but we’ve shared a lot of fun, laughs, and cups of coffee with each other. Now David works at CLI (one of my printers/proofers), and he hand-delivered my Daydream Believer proof. I love the smell of proof paper. Danke, David!

I first met Ms. Ophelia Chong through NvP, and the more I get to know her, the more inspired I get. She is a funny, talented lady who is very generous with her time. 谢谢你 for sharing your projects with me and for this sweet care package. Mango dofu? Haven’t had that in a while!

I’m on a bit of a portrait roll.
Stefan kindly volunteered to be a victim for one of my hair portraits. But he’s got pretty good bone structure, so I figured why not? I’ll just ink his face. The hair portrait will have to wait for now.

It was a lot of fun, but I went a little overboard with the shading in the face. I think I just aged him… @__@
But I’m not afraid to bare it all—good and bad—to you guys.

As you can see, Stefan’s a lot more cheery and youthful in person.
Happy inking,
Ninja

I haven’t been this antsy with anticipation over a book since James Jean’s Process Recess 2. Here’s a quick preview of Mr. Stefan G. Bucher’s 100 Days of Monsters (due out in March). The book is $13.59 on Amazon, so each monster costs less than 14 cents. But wait, there’s more. It comes with a DVD with all the monster clips!

I love the monster color code legend!

Aww, look at that ornery fellow lurking behind the bar code. Isn’t he cute?

I’m so tickled! My open source blot no. 7 will be in the upcoming AIGA Fresh Dialogue 8: Designing Audiences book! I’m so incredibly honored to be sharing a page such brilliant minds—Mr. Stefan G. Bucher (of the Daily Monster), Eric Rodenbeck (Flickr mapping whiz + Digg live data visualization guy), + Katie Salen (creator of Karaoke Ice).
I was super-excited when Mr. Bucher emailed me the request on Sunday. Thanks so much, Stefan! ^______^

Hallo everyone! I trust you’re all enjoying your long weekends. =) I just flew back on the red eye from LA and am trying to stay awake to re-adjust my sleep schedule. Alas, I only got 15 minutes of sleep on the flight so this is probably a losing battle. I already feel my eye lids closing on their own accord.
It feels good to be back home! I came back to a lovely surprise—not one, but two packages greeted me.
The one on the left is from Adrian, and the one on the right is from Stefan. =D
Stickers, postcards, and a fun tee in the first package. How sweet of him! Thanks, Adrian. =)

Yay!!! And my original monster from Stefan! Danke!!! We agreed to an art swap a while ago. I mentioned that I really liked the way he drew bark, so he kindly drew a winged friend perched on a branch. He also included a very nice handwritten note =) Such a kind and funny guy!

If you’ve missed the first 100 monsters, start from the beginning and go check out 344’s Daily Monster now! If you’re already a friend of the monsters, don’t miss out on the fun and participate. Mr. Bucher uploads an open source ink blot for you to download, print, create, and then send back to him for posting on his site. How cool is that?! Go check out the other entries or give it a go yourself! Below are some of my inky monster friends. =) The left side is the original ink blot supplied by Stefan, and the right side is my take.

It’s a lovely, snowy day in Jersey. Being that I’m sort of stuck indoors, I thought I’d take some time to share about another designer/illustrator that I love, Mr. Stefan G. Bucher. I first came across his clever work while at uni.
Born (1973) and raised in Germany, educated at the Art Center in Cali, and now living out of LA, Mr. Bucher started his design career as an art director for Wieden & Kennedy. He’s currently the man behind the curtain of the 344 Design Studio. He is responsible for CD packages for KCRW DJ Jason Bentley, the Solar Twins, Linda Wang, Whitney Houston, and Sting.
From 1999-2001, he served as He was the vice-president of membership for the LA chapter of the AIGA. In September of 2004, the Art Directors Club of New York selected him as one of their “Young Guns,” honoring him as one of 35 outstanding creatives age 30 and under. And his illustrated column ink & circumstance appears inside the pages of STEP magazine.
