Hand-made finds

hand-made-finds

I’ve been obsessively searching for hand-made hoodies on Etsy, and instead, I stumbled upon delicate, crocheted necklaces by graphic designer, Danielle Thompson. You can check out her Etsy shop here.

Oh, and it’s not an Etsy find, but I think I’m in love with this perfect Umsteigen hoodie.

Umsteigen also has some nice sweater dresses, too.

Umsteigen is Susanne Schubert, a talented, 29-year-old hailing from Montreal and now working in NY. All of her whimsical designs are limited-edition and individually hand screen printed. You can browse her shop here.

Giant Robot is pleased to announce a special in-store appearance by artist and designer Simone Legno of tokidoki. Since relocating from Rome to Los Angeles, Legno’s tokidoki has truly exploded in the pop culture and streetwear consciousness. Not only does his stylish, sophisticated, and cute art appear on the highly visible line of handbags for Le Sportsac but it has also received the seal of approval from the unoffical artibors of Japanese pop, Sanrio (in the form of limited-edition Hello Kitty jewelry) and Medicom (BE@RBRICKS). Legno’s latest project is a special collaboration with Mikasa to make a FIFA-regulation soccer ball, which he will be signing at GR2.

Renewable clothing by Fernando Brízio

Part performance art, part fashion. By placing colored felt-tip pens in the pockets of the dress, its appearance changes over time. Within an hour to one and a half hours the colored ink bleeds into the fabric and creates a one-off design for each occasion. The owner can then clean the dress and color it in a different way for each time they wear it.

What’s going on at the MET?

Ninja June 9th, 2008

whats-going-on-at-the-met

There are 3 great exhibitions currently showing at the Metropolitan Museum of Art: Jeff Koons on the Roof, Photography on Photography: Reflections on the Medium since 1960, and Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy.

It was a bright, sunny, 95 degree Saturday at the MET, but the Jeff Koons rooftop exhibit was well-worth the wait (long line to the elevator) and the heat. The rooftop garden was quite crowded, but I managed to snap a shot of the balloon dog statue without anyone else in the frame (you can see some of the crowd in the reflection though).

Exhibit runs until October 26, 2008 (rooftop access ends at 5 PM)

It’s about celebration and childhood and color and simplicity—but it’s also a Trojan horse. It’s a Trojan horse to the whole body of artwork.

Inspired by Superman’s costume, Rossella Jardini, the creative director of Moschino, substituted Superman’s iconic letter “S” with the letter “M,” for Moschino. For the men’s version, she placed the “M” into a heart-shaped field, a symbol used in Moschino’s branding.

Meet William, the MET hippo

+ H. 4 3/8 in. (11.2 cm), L. 7 7/8 in. (20 cm)

If you have some spare time, you should also visit William, the MET museum’s mascot. You can find William in the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Egyptian galleries. He is made of faience and is covered with lotus blossoms, which represent the hippopotamus’s creative forces in nature.

An Englishman, Captain H. M. Raleigh, and his family owned a picture of the hippopotamus, which they named William. In 1931 the captain wrote an article for the magazine Punch about his picture of William. The name caught on, and since that time the little blue hippo has been known as William to almost everyone.

Paul Pope designs clothes?

Ninja March 12th, 2008

He’s a striking contrast to the image of the awkward, unhip comic artist epitomized by Robert Crumb and Harvey Pekar. One of his former editors remembers meeting a young Mr. Pope at a comic conference 10 years ago with a torn T-shirt and a bare midriff. His first major graphic novel “Heavy Liquid” featured a fictional buyer’s guide with price breakdowns for the items that the characters sported. “I don’t think I made the clothes expensive enough,” says Mr. Pope, chuckling.
