California native, Casey Weldon, is known for his whimsical visual wordplay and geeky cultural references found in his paintings. Casey spent his childhood reading and drawing comics. He studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena where he graduated with honors in 2004. He now lives and works out of Brooklyn, NY.

The AT-AT is classic!

He latest show (see below) is on the virtual walls of the interactive gallery, 88Point5—Gallery 1988’s online arm. All his paintings are going for $250 or less.

Here’s a preview of some of the lovely creations from Kathie Olivas’s upcoming gallery show, Bittersweet. Bittersweet will open at G1988: SF on February 29. Cute and kind of creepy-looking all at the same time. And see the wonderful characters from her paintings realized in three-dimensional form, as she paints oil on epoxy resin sculptures.

I was having a semi-crappy day (mac problems + pushed-up deadlines… don’t say anything about my mac, Penguin), so this was a cool surprise. I got an email letting me know that I was 1 out of 8 who got all the cult references correct for the Crazy 4 Cult contest put out by Gallery 1988.
While I didn’t win this:

Top row – Michael Rapaport (True Romance, Higher Learning, etc.), Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Snakes on a Plane, everything), Richard Kelley (writer/director of Donnie Darko)
Bottom row – Edgar Wright (writer/director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz), Scott Mosier (producer of Clerks, Mallrats) and Kevin Smith (writer/director of Clerks, Mallrats, etc.)
I scored one of these instead:

I won’t know which one ’til they ship it to me.
Thanks, Jensen! =P

Can you name all the cult references in this poster? If so, email gallery1988@aol.com. The winner gets a signed version of the poster by Chris Lee (and maybe one of the icons seen on the poster will sign it too).
