Auction items will include original paintings, toys, and limited-edition collectibles from Simone Legno of tokidoki (see below),

Beautiful Losers: Make Something From Nothing

Ninja August 6th, 2008

beautiful-losers-make-something-from-nothing

Beautiful Losers celebrates the spirit behind one of the most influential cultural movements of a generation. In the early 1990’s a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the “establishment” art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture. Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories…speaking to themes of what happens when the outside becomes “in” as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today’s youth.

Beautiful Losers (a film companion to the exhibition and book) will debut this Friday night in New York at the IFC Center.

IFC Center Showtimes
12:45pm, 2:30pm, 4:15pm, 6:15pm, 8:20pm, 10:20pm, plus Fri-Sat: 12:15am
Director and Artists will be in attendance at the 8:20pm & 10:20pm screenings on Friday and Saturday

For Beautiful Losers fans outside the NY area, it will be showing in theaters in LA, San Francisco Chicago, and Portland.

AIGA members who buy tickets at the Beautiful Losers Store, can use the code BLAIGA. Buy three tickets to receive a free limited edition KRINK / Beautiful Losers graffiti marker at the IFC Center Theater.

Wired: Gun Camera Adds Graffiti to Other People’s Photos:

Berlin based artist Julius von Bismarck uses his oddly named camera-mod to project images onto street furniture where they appear in the photos of strangers, but remain invisible to their eyes.

How? It’s simple. The device has a slave unit on top which is triggered when it sees a flash fire. This triggers his own flash, which fires through the back of the camera, through a film slide containing his slogan and then on and out through the lens at the front. This works because a camera is pretty much a projector in reverse.

I’m all for graffiti, especially things like Banksi. But there’s something invasive about it. Maybe because it’s the nature of photography that makes it really personal that makes me uneasy. It’s a good thing I don’t use the flash.

Klara.be launched an experiment with the acclaimed Belgian painter Luc Tuymans. In The Tuymans Experiment, he anonymously paints a mural on a busy street in his hometown of Antwerp. What happens if you take his art out of its usual context? A hidden camera records the reactions of passersby.

I don’t think art can change the world. That’s not what art is about. Art is about creating images and passing on ideas. If it succeeds to make people think, even for a few seconds, it has done a lot already.
