you & me

you-me

I have the bad habit of doodling on any random bits of paper that I find, and I lose sketch books at an alarming rate.

I’m trying to remedy all of this by starting a sketchbook I really care about. Here’s my first entry.

I know it’s kind of hard to read. The text that goes with these images is just a small bit about when left half my face went numb from my root canal and Penguin had the right side of his face temporarily paralyzed from Shingles. So we smiled lopsided smiles at each other until the pain medication wore off.

Happy sketching,

I never said I love you: Process 2

Here’s the ballpoint pen sketch that I completed last night. I hope this better illustrates the placement of the hole (over the heart). My previous sketch had some drawing flaws, especially in the face.

I’m still using this pen that I stole from my hotel room while staying in Australia. It’s my favorite ballpoint pen. It has really even ink flow and produces delicate, thin lines. I’m going to miss it when it finally runs out of ink.

When I get put on hold, I doodle. I had Guitar Hero stuck in my head, so I doodled Amanda Palmer.

Detail of afp in her eyebrow.

I’ve been super-busy, but I managed to eek in a little drawing (yes, I carry slabs of wood with me on the train). Here’s a portrait of my dear grandpa with ballpoint pen over ink a light ink wash.

Ah, I will post more later. Until then, have a lovely weekend.

Ask Ninja 12: Vector swirls and curls

In one week, I got emails from 3 brides-to-be, 2 bands, and 1 curious student all asking:

Q. How did you create the swirls in your First Kiss Illustration?

First Kiss by Ninja vs Penguin

First Kiss

A. I drew all the paths using Adobe Illustrator’s pen tool—no fancy shortcuts. This was before I discovered the handy swirl tool. I would endlessly tweak and make many trips to my local Kinkos for large-format prints.

Now, I wouldn’t leave you hanging. Here’s my tutorial on making swirls and curls in Adobe Illustrator. It does require basic knowledge of the pen tool. If you’re not familiar with the pen tool, the University of Massachusetts Amherst has a great pdf guide and practice exercises here.

And for the truly pressed, I’ve included links to free vector swirls and curls at the end of this post. Now, on with the tutorial.

Step 1—Draw a spiral

Click and hold down the mouse on the Line tool to reveal the other tools. Select the Spiral tool.

Click and drag outward. If you’re a bit of a control enthusiast, you can also click on your art board, and a Spiral Options window will appear. Here, you can enter the spiral radius, decay, spiral segments, and spiral direction. I’m using the default 80% of decay, 10 segments option.

Using the Direct Select tool (white arrow), you can choose points and drag them outward to alter the spiral’s decay. Or as mentioned above, you can change the decay in the Spiral Options window.

Set the stroke weight to 10 pts.

Step 2—Covert to outline and modify shape

Object > Path > Outline Stroke

I like to work in outline mode, so I can see stray points more easily and then delete them. To access Illustrator’s outline mode, hit ⌘ + y. If you’re on a PC, substitute the ⌘ symbol for the Ctrl key. To exit outline mode, hit the same key combination again.

Once in outline mode, use the Direct Select tool to choose points and drag them to alter the line weight of your swirl.

Oh, Bernie Wrightson

Whenever I visit my friends, Q and Nancy, I feel like I’ve just walked into a small comic shop. They’ve got all sorts of goodies scattered about their apartment—a framed still from Samurai Jack by the door (Nancy works at Cartoon Network), LEGO Clone Troopers battling on the window sill, bobble head toys on the desk, Hellboy by the kitchen, Fables by Nancy’s purse, Batman in the bedroom, Hulk in the bathroom, and there are other titles in their bookcases. During our last visit, I spied Bernie Wrightson’s Frankenstein on their coffee table and was reminded of how much I love this man’s line work.

Here are some clips of Bernie Wrightson at WonderFest, an annual monster model convention held in Louisville, KY. Enjoy!

Happy hump day,

Drawing on the train

Ninja December 5th, 2008

drawing-on-the-train

During my train ride home, I started drawing a portrait of Tanya for her birthday.

My train conductor curiously watched as I drew and later offered to pose for me. How could I say no? She has a huge grin, and even her eyes smile when she smiles.

Drawn with blue, black, and purple ballpoint pens on my train schedule.

Detail

She’s not the first NJ Transit conductor to pose for me, though. Remember Tony?
