Sculptor: Gregor Gaida

Gregor Gaida learned his craft as a wood sculptor apprentice in Flensburg and is now pursuing a masters degree in Bremen, Germany. His haunting, blank-faced sculptures are part of his Sum of Stories show and will be exhibited at the Adler Gallery next year!

The result of my work is a translation of reality. With it, the spatial object is put into relation while the sum of perceptions reflects the ambiguity of reality.

Wow, I am in awe of Wataru Itou’s handmade, papercraft castle. This intricate paper castle took four years to create and includes lights, a ferris wheel, and a moving train! It is on view at the Umi no Ue no Oshiro (A Castle On the Ocean—海の上のお城) exhibition at Uminohotaru.

Thanks for the tip, Ray!

Stereo.type by Ebon Heath

Language comes to life in Ebon Heath’s beautiful, kinetic typographic ballet, Stereo.type.

Heath’s intricately hand-cut mobile sculptures (the more recent pieces are laser-cut) feature Tupac and Rakim lyrics, Marinetti’s Futurist Manifesto, advertising slogans, and religious texts. His cascading tyvec and bristol letters are strung on fine wire and dance in the air. Heath cites Alexander Calder as a strong influence on his work.

Brooklyn-based Ebon Heath is an artist, graphic designer, and a Professor in graphic design at Lehman College (he holds a bachelor’s degree from RISD). He is also the co-founder and partner of Cell Out.

Happy Monday, everyone!

I’m really loving Diem Chau’s crayon sculptures. Chau often uses common, every day objects (she has a miniature series constructed from toothpicks) to create her delicate narratives.

Typewriter Sculptures

It takes roughly 40 typewriters and 1,000 hours for Mayer to assemble a full-scale figurine like this reclining female form.
[...]
Mayer, who describes his work as a cross between Leonardo da Vinci’s mechanical drawings and the gritty futures imagined by sci-fi maestros William Gibson and Philip K. Dick, assembles his artwork without welding, soldering or gluing.

- Wired

Over the weekend, Ninja mentioned she had a penchant for old school typewriters. I’ve used typewriters, and I’ll take a pc any day. But there is something kind of really awesome about refashioning these old relics and making something fantastic with them.

More after the jump.

When the shit hits the fan

Oh, come on, laugh a little.

Photo from the Zentrum Paul Klee Centre

A powerful gust of wind recently swept a house-sized sculpture of dog feces from its display outside a Swiss museum. The massive inflatable sculpture, created by U.S. contemporary artist Paul McCarthy and titled Complex Shit, is part of the Zentrum Paul Klee Centre’s exhibit East of Eden: A Garden Show.

The wind carried the work away, knocking down a power line and breaking a window at a nearby orphanage before falling to the ground about 200 metres from the centre.

The museum had yet to contact McCarthy about the incident.
