Self-portrait homework process

Assignment: paint a self-portrait with the perspective from an unusual angle. Try to capture a view of yourself that you normally don’t see.

I chose to paint myself sleeping.

I went to the art supply store and picked up the usual—linseed oil, gel medium, and brushes. Then out of the corner of my eye, I saw something sparkle—iridescent acrylic paint. No question, I had to get some. I figured I might as well give it a go with my homework assignment; I’ve got nothing to lose.

I prepped the wood board with Golden matte medium. It dries completely clear is thinner than typical clear gesso. I love this stuff!

Then I drew a rough sketch with chalk.

Next, I applied few washes with iridescent acrylic paint and waterproof black ink to block in the highlights and shadows.

A few layers of white gesso and iridescent paint later, and here we are.

I thinned down the iridescent paint and used it for the creases of the bed sheets and pillow.

Here’s a close-up. Oh, it’s so shimmery in person. I feel like a kid who can’t stop staring at shiny things.

Happy painting,
Ninja

Hairy process

Here are the steps for my bird nest/geisha hair portrait.

ninja_hair1.jpg

The eyes are the window to the soul, so I always start there. No real reason why I was using a blue pencil other than I couldn’t find my regular pencils and this one was just on my desk.

ninja_hair2.jpg

I really enjoy drawing/inking hair. Yes, I was inking on top of my laptop. I could have cleared the table, but I was too lazy. I was listening to Radiohead and Death Cab for Cutie on iTunes, too.

I go about blocking in the shadows and midtones. Highlights are created by leaving those areas blank, so the white of the paper shows through. I just started using the Rives BFK paper, and it soaks in the ink wonderfully (plus, it’s thick enough that the moisture doesn’t cause it to warp like crazy). Good stuff.

ninja_hair3.jpg

After layers and layers of ink, the hair is done.

ninja_hair4.jpg

It’s lonely, so I add a little, feathered friend. I think it also gives the portrait a bit of a fairy-tale vibe (and kind of makes the funky hair style excusable).

ninja_hair5.jpg

I deepened the blues in the face and finished inking the bird.

Here, Stefan pointed out that the bird’s tail was too large in proportion to his body. What can I say? The man’s got a critical eye and a keen sense of detail. Danke, Stefan for your help!

ninja_hair6.jpg

With the pen tool, I created a selection of the bird’s tail and moved it to another layer (I feathered that selection by .2 pixels so that there wouldn’t be such a hard edge). Then I scaled and rotated it to the proper proportion. Unfortunately, there wasn’t enough image (because it originally bled off the page). With a bit more of the pen tool, cloning stamp, and healing brush, the extra bits of the tail were created.

Happy Drawing,

I try not to take myself too seriously.

not-serious-self-portrait.jpg

8 in x 10 in, drawn in Adobe Illustrator

I don’t really like doing self-portraits, but I try to do at least one a year. I hadn’t planned on doing one just yet for this year—this one was for my figure drawing homework. Someone once told me that drawing self-portraits is good for the soul + allows you to reflect on who you are. I guess that’s partially true, but when I was drawing this I couldn’t stop looking at the new zit that sprout up (it’s on the side facing away). ~__^

My sister tells me that this goofy face is spot on. Penguin thinks I look a little mean here.

But that doesn’t really matter, now does it?

Happy drawing,
Ninja
