The EyeWriter

Ninja November 18th, 2009

In 2003, graffiti artist and writer Tony Quan (aka TEMPTONE) was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. This disease has left him paralyzed with the exception of his eyes. This is where the EyeWriter comes in. This eye-tracking apparatus and custom, open source software allows Tony and other artists with paralysis to create art using only their eyes.

Art is a tool of empowerment and social change, and I consider myself blessed to be able to create and use my work to promote health reform, bring awareness about ALS and help others.

Liu Bolin’s camouflage art

Ninja July 28th, 2009

No Photoshop here! Beijing-based artist, Liu Bolin, covers his subjects from head to toe with paint so that they blend into their surroundings. This camouflage collection is an exploration of human nature and animal instincts.

Most animals live in harmony with their environment, creating habitats and protecting themselves through concealment and adaptation. Humans conversely seek to manipulate and destroy natural environments to best suit our needs, or the remove ourselves as far as possible from our base form. Through presenting humans camouflaged in artificial surroundings, Bolin questions whether we ourselves are natural, or artificial? We seek to elevate ourselves outside of the natural world, but this in turn alienates us and upsets the balance from which we came.

Artist’s education
In in 1995, Liu Bolin graduated from the Art Department of Shandong Arts Institute with a bachelor’s degree. In 2001, he Received a master’s degree from the Sculpture Department of Central Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing.

Cardon Copy’s flyer makeover

Ninja July 27th, 2009

cardon-copys-flyer-makeover

Queens-based designer Cardon Webb (aka Cardon Copy) took his mother’s advice: “Leave it better than the way you found it,” and redesigned and replaced hand-made neighborhood fliers around New York City.

Cardon Copy, takes the vernacular of self-distributed fliers and tear-offs we have all seen in our neighborhoods. It involves hijacking these unconsidered fliers and redesigning them, over powering their message with a new visual language. I then replace the original with the redesign in its authentic environment.

Take a look at his before and after shots:

Last month, UK artist, HUSH,   painted this mural for his recent solo exhibition, Hymn To Beauty, at Carmichael Gallery!

Hush is stimulated, influenced and driven by his cross cultural experiences. Having trained as a graphic designer and illustrator at Newcastle School of Art and Design, his work has taken him across Asia and Europe, whilst simultaneously developing his prominence as a contemporary artist. His fascination with Asian graphic novels is juxtaposed with inspiration from the likes of Mimmo Rotella, Roy Lichtenstein, and Sir Peter Blake, creating a unique style that has led to worldwide acclamation.

Here are some pieces from his show, Hymn To Beauty.
